ABOUT THE ALLEGHANY COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD
Alleghany County Public Schools is governed by a seven-member
School Board. Members of the School Board are appointed by the Alleghany
County Board of Supervisors. Each member represents each of the Countyís
seven magisterial districts. The magisterial districts are Boiling Springs,
Clifton Forge East, Clifton Forge West,
Covington, Falling Spring,
Jackson River, and Sharon.
The four-year terms of the
Board members are staggered with two members appointed during one year, one
during the next year, three during the subsequent year, and one during the

The Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the Board are elected each
year by the other Board members at an organizational meeting
in early July. The school divisionís fiscal year begins on July 1 and ends on
June 30. The Board approves the policies that govern the operation of the
County schools and is responsible for adoption of the budget; adoption of
state-mandated plans; and the appropriation of funds. The Board also
appoints a Superintendent who carries out its policies.

The Alleghany County School Boardís Policy Manual is
published online as a convenience for parents, employees, and all other
interested individuals. Although every effort has been made to ensure the
accuracy of material published online, the only official edition of the
policy manual is the printed version maintained by the Deputy Clerk to the
Board. Downloaded versions are not official.

School Board Meeting Agendas
meetings of the Alleghany County School Board generally are held on the
third Monday of each month at 6:00 p.m. From May through August, the Board
generally meets in the School Board Meeting Room of the Central office
complex at 100 Central Circle, Low Moor, VA. From September through April,
the Board generally meets in one of its schools or at the Jackson
River Technical Center.

superintendent and the School Board Chairman are responsible for the
preparation of the agenda and any other correspondence related to the Board.
The superintendent may be contacted by phone Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. -
4:00 p.m. at (540) 863-1811, by mail at P.O. Drawer 140, 100 Central Circle,
Low Moor, VA, 24457, or by e-mail at
agenda shall be finalized by 3:00 p.m. on the Wednesday which is eight
working days prior to any School Board meeting. Any additions made to the
agenda after it is finalized by the superintendent must be approved by the
Chairman. All requests for additions to the agenda must be submitted to the
superintendent or the Chairman prior to 12:00
Noon on the Wednesday which is three working days
prior to any School Board meeting.
Any citizen may address the Board at any regular meeting during the Public
Comment section of the School Board Agenda. The Public Comment section will
be set at 15 minutes, and each citizen will be given 3 minutes to present
comments. Persons wishing to appear before the School Board to address
an item that appears on the School Board Agenda may notify the Board
immediately prior to the scheduled meeting. The person must provide
his or her name, physical address, and the agenda item he or she wishes to
address on the form provided by the Clerk of the Board at the meeting
location. Persons wishing to appear before the Board to address
a topic that does not appear on the School Board Agenda shall submit a
written request to the superintendent or to the School Board Chairman for
placement on the agenda. The person must submit this written request
no later than noon of the Wednesday preceding the regular board meeting.
The request shall set forth, with clarity, the subject matter of such
business to be addressed before the Board.
