Mr. Eugene P. Kotulka was appointed
superintendent by the Alleghany County School Board on June
2, 2015, and will begin serving on July 1, 2015.
Prior to assuming the position
in Alleghany County, he served as the director of student
services for Orange County Public Schools.
Mr. Kotulka began his career in
education in 1978, teaching social studies and mathematics
while coaching basketball and football at Robious Middle and
Monacan High Schools in Chesterfield County. For the next
sixteen years, he continued to teach and coach for Hopewell
City, King George County, and Spotsylvania County Public
In 1998, Mr. Kotulka began his
administrative career as an administrative intern at
Courtland High School.
In 2000, Mr. Kotulka served as
the assistant principal for Spotsylvania County High School
before becoming the principal of Magna Vista High School and
then Orange County High School.
Mr. Kotulka was born in Quakertown,
Pennsylvania and graduated from Quakertown High School in
He earned his Bachelor’s degree
from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1978, and
completed his Master in Administration and Supervision
degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2000.
Mr. Kotulka is married to his wife,
Jane is currently a librarian.
They have four children: Jeisson,
Maria, Julieth, and Santiago.
Mr. Kotulka is an avid reader, a
basketball fan, and loves animals. The Kotulka’s have three
Labrador retrievers and an English bulldog, as well as a few
cats and birds.
Mr. Kotulka’s experiences in education
are varied and broad, and he has worked in five very diverse
school divisions in Virginia.
He believes in setting high
academic standards, raising the achievement of all students,
providing good first instruction, putting students first,
and listening and communicating with staff, parents and
members of the school and community.
He also believes that the
teaching staff is the backbone of education and that
collaboration and team work are the keys to success.
