     Dr. Sarah Talton Campbell became the superintendent of Alleghany County Public Schools on July 1, 2009. Dr. Campbell has been an employee of ACPS for 36 years. Prior to being named superintendent, Dr. Campbell served for eight years as the divisionís Assistant Superintendent for Instruction. She also held the positions of elementary supervisor, elementary principal and classroom teacher.
     Dr. Campbell is a native of Radford, Virginia and a 1973 graduate of Radford High School. All of her post-secondary studies took place at Virginia Tech. In 1977, Dr. Campbell earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education. In 1991 she earned a Masterís of Arts degree in Education Leadership. In May 2007, Dr. Campbell was awarded the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies.
     Dr. Campbell is married to Mac Campbell, a native of Clifton Forge, VA. They have three children, all of whom completed their K-12 education in Alleghany County Public Schools. Their oldest daughter, Emily, teaches chemistry at Alleghany High School. Emily and her husband Ryan Muterspaugh reside in Alleghany County with their daughter, Kylie Grace, and their son, Caleb Ryan. Emily is a 2000 graduate of Roanoke College. Their daughter, Catherine, earned a degree from Virginia Techís Pamplin College of Business. Catherine lives in Norfolk where she is employed as a convention services manager for Visit Norfolk. Catherine and her husband Ben Williamson have one son, Lucas Corbett. Their son, John, is employed by Altec Industries. He resides in Alleghany County.
     Dr. Campbell is a member of the Covington-Hot Springs Rotary Club and St. Stephenís Anglican Church.

The Superintendent of Schools serves as the chief executive officer of the Alleghany County School Board.  Major duties of the superintendent include, but are not limited to, the following:

Acting as the educational leader of the school division
Enforcing school policy and regulations
Overseeing staff personnel management
Overseeing facility management
Directing community relations
Overseeing pupil personnel services
